In order to use material as controlled wood, the company must implement chain of custody requirements (FSC-STD-40-004) and the requirements for controlled wood outlined in FSC-STD-40-005. According to FSC-STD-40-005, the company shall use only material purchased as controlled from another FSC certificate holder or verify material itself.
For company verification, the company must assess the area from where material is purchased through a risk assessment. When there is low risk of wood coming from unacceptable sources, risk designation for the area is low. When risk is not low for all controlled Wood categories, or information is not sufficient to confirm low risk, the risk designation is unspecified. In areas of unspecified risk, the organization shall conduct further verification in accordance with FSC requirements. If the material cannot meet the requirements it cannot be used in FSC Mix products. More on FSC webpages.
